Karam means generosity in Arabic. Founded in Chicago in 2007, Director of Development 2024, Karam Foundation has impacted and improved the lives of over 100,000 Syrian refugees since 2011. As a Syrian-led organization with more than half of our team made up of refugees, we provide Syrian refugee youth and their families with the tools and opportunities to realize their potential. Our programs are implemented in Reyhanli and Istanbul, Turkiye, with additional support in Jordan, Lebanon, and the United States.
Karam is a visionary organization that focuses on education and leadership, promotes innovation and creativity, and invests heavily in the future of Syrian refugee youth. We work with refugees to develop solutions for them and create a future where Syrian youth can live with self-determination and dignity wherever they are. The Director of Development will help secure philanthropic capital for Karam’s innovative approach to large-scale community-focused development.
Karam is seeking an experienced and committed Development Director to lead Karam’s fundraising efforts during an ambitious period of growth driven by the needs of the displaced communities we serve. The majority of our work takes place in Reyhanli, Turkey, on the Syrian border, and in the areas most affected by the 2023 earthquake.
Refugees in this area have been displaced multiple times over the past 12 years, making our commitment to building a safe future amid uncertainty urgent and life-affirming. This leadership role will be critical to achieving Karam’s goal of significantly increasing annual revenue.
The Development Director will work closely with the CEO to manage, maintain and grow our major gift pipeline and play a key role in shaping and driving the growth of the organization. The Director of Development will lead a team of 3-4 remote employees and lead fundraising efforts to major donors, foundations, and online small donors. The Director of Development will work with the Director of Communications to lead the Communications and Development department. Karam employs 11 people in the United States.
The board of directors is heavily involved in fundraising, with 100% of the board giving to Karam each year. Additionally, the Director of Development should be expected to travel 6–8 times per year. Most of these are short domestic trips, with international trips to Türkiye only once or twice a year.

Director of Development 2024: Lead Growth and Drive Strategic Innovation QUALIFICATIONS
- Minimum 7-10 years of experience in nonprofit development with a proven track record of increasing revenue and achieving fundraising goals.
- Proven experience in raising large donations, supporting donors, and writing grant applications.
Strong leadership and management skills with the ability to inspire and successfully lead remote teams. - Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build and maintain relationships with a variety of stakeholders.
- Strategic thinker with the ability to develop and execute long-term fundraising plans. You are passionate about Karam’s mission and commitment to supporting Syrian refugee youth and families.
- Knowledge of the Middle East, refugee issues, and/or experience working in a global or multicultural context will be an advantage.
